Welcome to The Booze Whisperer. If you are somebody who enjoys a good tipple now and then and want to learn about some of the world’s greatest beverages – you have come to the right spot.
Why Booze? That’s simple – because at the end of the day, choosing just one type of beverage would be too boring and would exclude a whole segment of great tasting palate pleasers. Here is the plain truth:
As you go through childhood you experience many things for the first time. The first taste of milk, juice and soda are all adventurous. Some tastes are pleasing to you – others not. Sadly, over a period of time, these drinks all begin to taste the same.
There is nothing adventurous about opening a bottle of cola or pouring yourself a glass a milk. Sure, the big marketing machines will throw new flavors at you or throw a fad fruit (pomegranate craze anybody?) or coloring at you, but in the end those industries thrive on providing you with the same boring products every year. If you like consistency and profitable chemical concoctions – than have a Coke and a smile and leave my blog – we aren’t sure to agree on much.
If you like adventure, however, this blog is for you. Booze is the embodiment of adventure. Off limits until adulthood (or the parents are out of town) – most of us get to experience alcoholic beverages for the first time when we have long tired of the monotony of iced tea and Pepsi. Once the explorations begin, the possibilities are endless – each bottle of wine is different from the next based on thousands of variables.
Beer alone offers hundreds of different styles with an infinite amount of ingredient combinations. Then there is whiskey which varies in styles from Kentucky Bourbons to Single Malt Scotches from Scotland (even the spelling differs by country – the Scots have no E in whisky). Let’s not forget about rums, vodkas, meads or hard ciders. Not only do these products give you endless adventures for your palate – they also give you a passport to other cultures. You can enjoy a South African wine or a Martinique rum or a Czech beer easily without buying a plane ticket to any of those places – try experiencing another culture with Coke (though to be fair – Coke is a great partner to a lot of the boozes that I will discuss on this site).
It gets even better. You can make your own drinks. Making beer is really easy and actually more affordable than buying commercially made beer. Sure the marketing machines of the American brewing industry would prefer it if you just sat on your couch and mindlessly purchased their very profitable bastardizations of mankind’s oldest drinks (after water and mommy’s milk of course), but with a little ambition and investment you’ll be on your way brewing beers and hard ciders in no time. Nothing beats the fresh flavor of a homebrew and the feeling of independence that comes with being able to create the flavors that you appreciate the most.
So grab a glass or bottle and celebrate your little adventure with me and keep in touch. I will continue to update my site with featured drinks and great new adventures for you to explore. In addition, I will try to serve as a consultant for anybody who needs some advice for pairings or brewing. In all cases – I am not pretentious – nothing angers me more than people who have turned something as social and plebian as drinking into an act of snobbery.
Cheers! I look forward to sharing many drinks with you . . . . . . The Booze Whisperer
